2007 FINAL RUNS

 

 

BUSY WEEKEND FOR THE RIDE ALONGS

Dec. 17th Members and 2 ride alongs from Allentown, Pa had a busy     weekend, with 17 runs.  Including 2 MVA's, 2 Chimneys, 2 AFA's, 2         Transfer's, 3 Wires down, 1 Inside Investigation, 1 Outside                        Investigation, and 4 Medicals.                                                                                 

 

MINOR MVA

Dec. 14th E171, SU17, SQ41, and Amb 7-8 responded to a minor MVA    at 973 Cider Press Rd. Surprisingly upon arrival PSP was already on     the scene, and stated there were no patients and no hazards.  Asst. 17  canceled the Squad and placed the box in service minutes later.            

 

TRAINING

Dec. 13th Members headed to town for the evening as a joint training   exercise was held at Headquarters Station.  The evenings activities       was for the two department to meet and familiarize their self with        each others equipment and location. Special thanks to Nick and Tim   for their support of the cause.                                                                                  

 

HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Dec. 13th Members spent the day hanging Christmas decorations and  lights inside and out of the station. To stick with the theme the               station was outfitted our signature colors.  Thanks to those who             helped, and made this possible.                                                                              

 

WELCOME HOME

Dec. 11th The Officers and Members of the New Franklin Vol. Fire          Dept. would like to welcome home Reese and the rest of the Schaeffer  family.  Reese made it home today after spending nearly 2 months at   Hershey Medical Center growing strong enough to eat and breath on    his own.                                                                                                                              

 

MOBILE HOME

Dec. 9th Truck 17 and E172 responded to 5518 Main St. Marion lot 5     at 0845 for a mobile home fire.  Co.8 arrived to find a mobile home        with a small fire in the bathroom and put a quick knock on it.                  Command 8 held 8 and T17 for overhaul. Crews set up positive                pressure and assisted with overhaul. Units were back in service in         under an hour.                                                                                                                

 

LANDING ZONE

Dec. 3rd Engine 17-1 responded to fill the 7-5 box for an auto                   accident in the 5600 blk of LWE.  E171 was redirected to the LZ at          Fayetteville Elementary School.                                                                              

 

INSIDE INVESTIGATION

Dec. 2nd Truck 17 responded to 36 W. Main Street, Waynesboro on       box 2-01 for the inside investigation.  Da' Truck staged at Potomac        and Main.  Crews assisted Co. 2 checking walls and ceilings with the     TIC.  Units were on the scene for over an hour.                                                

 

HOUSE 

Nov. 29th Units from Co. 1, 17, and Sta. 4 responded for a report of        smoke coming from the dwelling.  AC 1-1 arrived to find a fire in the     living room.  Members from Sta. 4 put a quick knock on the fire which  had already began to burn itself out.  Crews preformed ventilation        and overhaul procedures and units remained on the scene a little         over an hour.   Fire was started by a propane heater.                                    

 

SIDE OF GREASE WITH THAT? 

Nov. 27th Units from Co. 1, 17, and Sta. 4 responded to Hardees on        LWE ,for a reported electrical fire.  After a thorough investigation it    was determined that a flash fire had occurred, due to a severe grease   build up, and over heated a roof  top vent system also tripping a             breaker. Units remained on the scene for about 45 minutes.                     

 

COVERING THE "BRONX"

Nov. 17th With Truck 1 and 42 out of service for the annual                       Chambersburg  "Holiday" Parade, Da' Big Stick II covered the Boro       for about two hours.  Originally we were to standby at Station 2,             however the Police  Department needed assistance with lighting in       the area of  Washington and Second.  Trk 17 lit the corner up with         flood lights and watched the parade as well.                                                     

 

FCPSTC

Nov. 17th Da' Big Stick II spent the afternoon at the training center      assisting with the new Del-Mar curriculum.  Students went over              power tool operation, proper ladder climbing techniques, and how to  throw basic ground ladders.                                                                                     

 

HOUSE

Nov. 14th Eng Co. 17 responded to 65 E. Main St. on box 7-5 for a             reported dwelling fire.  A member from Co. 7 was on the scene and         confirmed a "working structure fire".  Chief 7 arrived with command   and DC7 had Ops.  Crews from 7 put a quick knock on a small fire and  was under control in minutes.  Chief downgraded the assignment          shortly after and crews returned to service.                                                      

 

2085, BUT NOT FOR A MEDICAL

Nov. 6th E171, SU17 responded to 2085 Wayne Rd. for an auto                 accident.  Asst.17 arrived just after dispatch to find two autos with       one in the tree.  A1-9 transported one class 3 and crews controlled        fluid leaks. The rescue company was turned around shortly after           dispatch. Units remained on the scene for about 20 minutes                    

 

CONGRATULATIONS

Nov. 1st The officers and members of the New Franklin Fire                      Department sends out our congratulations and welcomes the newest   member to the Schaeffer family.  Kevin and Michelle Schaeffer are the proud new parents of a baby boy; Reese Schaeffer.  Everyone is well       and healthy as the baby was born at Hershey Medical center.                   

 

MVA

Oct. 31st E171, SQ41, A8-8, and A7-7 responded to the intersection of   Wayne Rd., and Kriner Rd. for an auto accident around 15:30 Hrs.        E171 arrived to find two autos, roadway partialy blocked, and no           serious hazards.  Sq 41 was placed in service and the second bls was     started after the driver of the second vehicle decided to be evaluated   by ER staff.  Crews remained on the scene for about 30 minutes.             

 

HOUSE FIRE

Oct. 25th Da' Big Stick II was back in the Boro for a house fire at 248     E. Mckinley St.  Da' Truck just happened to be in getting fuel when the assignment was sounded.  Su 17 responded with the remainder of the  Truck crew.  Crews laddered the dwelling as well as set up                         ventilation, and lighting.  Utilities were controlled and members           helped with overhaul once the investigation was complete.  Units          operated for just over an hour.                                                                                

 

SMOKE SCARE AND SHED FIRE

Oct. 16th Trk 17, and E171 responded to 34 Renolds Ave. for reported  smoke in the dwelling.  Co.17 staged and was placed in service shortly after.  At 15:30 Hrs E172 responded on the shed fire with exposures at 5195 Jack Rd.  E172 hauled two loads of water and crew assisted with  overhaul. E172 went in service about a half hour later.                                

 

BARN FIRE

Oct. 13th E172 responded along with the rest of the 7-5 box and a few   tankers for a barn fire at 1215 Mont Alto Rd.  E17 crew pulled the           second line off 7-2 and advanced it into the attic space of a milking      parlor. The crew encountered heavy fire conditions and tried to place a knock on it.  Trk 42 crew opened up the roof and eventually went        heavy duty once the fire gained control of the scene.  Units operated    for about 2 hours and E172 made 4 water shuttles.                                        

 

BURGER KING

Oct. 13th  Units were back out on Lincoln Way this morning at Burger King.  E172 and Trk 17 responded, later to be downgraded to the            Truck only.  Crews set up ventilation as a fire was already                          extinguished by the hood system.                                                                           

 

KFC

Oct. 12th  Units were alerted on box 44-01 for a reported building fire  at KFC.  E171, E172, and Trk 17 responded and staged.  The truck           crew assisted with laddering, and later found out that it was a mulch  fire.  Crew went in service shortly after. About an hour later E172, and Da Truck responded to a mobile home fire at 5413 LWE.  Truck 17         opened up the skirting around the mobile and found a small fire            around a thermal layer of a pipe.                                                                           

 

FIRE PREVENTION

Oct. 12th With the leaves turning and cool air blowing, we all know it  is that time of year again.  Members spent the day out to the local          schools visiting and teaching the kids fire prevention. This years           theme was knowing your escape route.                                                                

 

HOUSE FIRE

Oct. 10th  E171, E172 and Trk 17 responded for a report of a mobile       home fire that turned out to be a modular home with a large garage.    \ Units arrived to find heavy fire and with fire attack.  Co. 17 members assisted with operations and ventilation. Units returned to service a    few hours later.                                                                                                               

 

BARN FIRE

Oct. 9th  E171, E172, and Da Big Stick responded on box 7-7 to 2071       Mt. Pleasant Rd., for a barn fire.  Crews spent hours on fire                        suppression and overhaul.  Trk . 17 went in service 7 hours later.          

 

L.O.D.D. SERVICES

Oct. 9th  Members and family from several counties converged in           Bigglersville today to unite as we pay our last respects to a fallen           brother. Adam Cole was responding to a fire call as he was fatally          injured in a two vehicle accident.  Our thoughts are with you.                  

 

 

 

BACK IN THE BOROUGH

Oct. 7th  Truck 17  responded on a reported dwelling fire at 364 E.         McKinley St., in Chambersburg.  Truck 17 is now part of the first             alarm assignment for dwellings as a supplement to Trk 1. This will be  the first time Co. 17 has ran first alarm since the now disbanded Task  Force 1 box.                                                                                                                       

AFA AT MICHAUX

Oct. 6th  Truck 17  responded on the AFA to Michaux Manor for alarm bells.  Da' Big Stick II set up and went to the roof for the                              investigation.  Placed in service shortly there after.                                      

 

MVA

Oct. 5th  E171 responded to box 17-3 in the 1500 Blk of New Franklin    Rd. Crews helped package patient, and then went in service to                 respond on a brush fire on Hartzok Rd.                                                               

 

L.O.D.D.

Oct 5th  The Officers, and Members of the New Franklin Volunteer        Fire Department would like to express our deepest sympathies to the  Cole Family in their time of loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with    you.  If there is anything our department  can do in any way please       feel free to contact us.                                                                                                  

MOBILE HOME

Sept 29th  E171 and E172 responded on the mobile home fire at 5300    LWE lot 4A.  E7 arrived with smoke showing, and put a quick knock      on the vacant property.  Command 7 staged all units and Co. 17 was     placed in service within 15 minutes.  E172 handled a transfer to Co. 7  and no call were handled during that time.                                                       

MVA

Sept 28th  E171 responded to box 8-81-B, which turned out to be box    44-01, on an auto accident at LWE and the NB on ramp.  This                   intersection has become notorious for MVA's ever since the                       construction work has been completed.  E171 continued in and               assisted with Pt. care and hazards.  Co.17 was placed in service               shortly after.                                                                                                                    

 

WIRES, BARN, AND A HOUSE

Sept 27th  A quick moving storm brought 3 runs for 17.  E171                    responded to Newcomer Rd. for wires, turned out to be cable only,         and cleared within minutes.  While 171 was returning Da' Truck             responded on the 15-3 box for a barn, and was soon placed in service.  Minutes later box 44-04 was sounded for a dwelling sending 171, 172,   and Truck 17.  Members of the truck made quick work of the roof and   vented while the engine crews stood by.  Co. 17 was back in service at    20:15 hrs.                                                                                                                           

 

I-81

Sept 22nd  E171 responded on the auto accident at I-81 on the                 Northbound off ramp.  171 provided manpower and was placed in         service shortly after.                                                                                                     

 

TRAINING

Sept 20th  Members took a break    from the usual Truck Co. work        drills to focus on the "bread and    butter" of the Engine Co..                   Members from 17 and 14 went          through several evolutions from     room and contents to simulated     basement fires. Both departments worked together to accomplish       the goals and tactics that were        taught back in essentials.                 

 

ANOTHER OUTBUILDING

Sept 19th  Da' Big Stick II responded along with most of the county to  4987 Guitner Rd. for what was originally a shed fire that turned into    a large outbuilding storing everything from ATV's to crates of                  household cleaners.  Units arrived to find heavy fire. Members from     Sta.4, and 17 made an aggressive attack, only to be pulled out                  minutes later after gaining information of the contents of the                  building.  Truck 17 took a position side c and went heavy duty. After    heavy equipment was brought in to demolish the building a final wet   down was preformed and units went in service hours later.   The last    picture shows the barn fire on Shimpstown Rd. atop of ladder 17 .         

 

 

 

EARLY MORNING OUT BUILDING

Sept 10th  Co. 17 was alerted on the ?5-02? box for a barn at 7012           Rock Hill Rd. at 02:07hrs. E172 arrived to confirm a large shed fully     involved already on the ground.  Crews placed two hand lines in-           service and began controlling the exposure that suffered some minor  exterior damage as well as knocking down hot spots on the fire               building. Units from 5 advanced additional hand lines for overhaul.    The call originally came in from Amb. 5-7 as they were returning           from another incident. Truck 17 staged for lighting purposes.                 

 

PEPPERONI ON THAT?

Sept 7th Truck 17 and E17-2 responded on the building fire at                 Arturo's Pizza early Friday morning.  Da' Big Stick II took a side A         position and laddered side A&D along with the roof, and vented on       side A&C, as well as  set up PPV on Side B .  Crews  operated for about   2 hours and assisted with overhaul.                                                                      

 

HURST TOOL TRAINING

Sept 6th 17 Hose headed out to Beachers junkyard for a little "tool        time" Thursday evening with the Hurst tool rep, demonstrating the      new power units and tools offered by the company. After a little              instruction on the operation of the new units members tore into 4         cars that were donated by the junkyard.  The Department is looking     to outfit E172 with a second rescue tool and cutters.                                    

 

DOES THIS STUFF WORK

Sept 5th Several members have spent countless hours removing the outdated and antique striping on E171.  Taking the Scotchlite off is the easy part, removing the adhesive has been very time consuming.  The new striping is in and will be applied in the near future.  Thanks to those that are making this happen. 

 

MVA

Sept 5th E171, SU-17 responded for an MVA on Wayne Rd. at I-81.         Crews arrived to find multiple vehicles.  Crews assessed patients and   had 2 class 3 transports and 3 patient refusals. After hazards were        cleared units went in service.                                                                                   

 

CONGRATULATIONS

The NFVFD would like to congratulate Micah Owens on his                       acceptance into the Borough Of Chambersburg Fire Department.           Good luck at the Academy, and have fun riding the "bus".                         

 

100th ANNUAL PATH VALLEY PARADE

August 18th Members spent countless hours preparing for the annual Path Valley Parade.  Because it was the 100th anniversary we decided  to "Dump the House" and head over the hill, and it all paid off in the    end.  Co.1 7 ended up bringing home 4 awards including the 6.5 foot     best overall appearing company.  Other awards included second            place aerial device, second place engine (171), and first place special  unit.  The parade lasted 2 hours and had about 200 entries with 75%   being fire apparatus.  Congratulations to all that attended and               brought home awards, it was a good time for all, and a tradition that   will continue for many years to come. Thanks to Adams Truck 13 and  Adams E4-1 for covering our house while we attended. "From one          Pierce to another."

TRANSFER AND MVA

August 11th E172 headed across the border to AC Co. 13 on a transfer.  It was a quiet day until local box 13-6 was sounded for an MVA.  E172  along with Adams Cty. units responded to find two vehicles with the     roadway blocked.  Crew from E172 assisted with Patient care and           vehicle hazards.  No other calls were handled.                                                 

 

BURN BAN BANDIT

August 10th Local box 17-4 was sounded at 09:16 for a brush fire at       5420 G.H.Rd.  Co. 17 arrived to find the home owner burning her            trash off after reading of the impending county wide burn ban. After    explaining the ordinance already in place against burning trash the    fire was extinguished and units went in service shortly after.                   

 

DOUBLE WIDE

August 10th Box 17-3 was sounded at 03:49 for a dwelling fire at 1881  Hartzok Rd.  Co. 17 arrived to find a well involved doublewide mobile  home.  Crews made an aggressive search once there was word of              possible entrapment.   Once the dwelling was cleared and                          homeowners stated there was no one home at the time, defensive           operations were initiated, and overhaul began.  All crews on scene        did a good job and worked together to get the job done in a timely          manner.  Co.17 was assisted by 8, Sta. 4, 7, and 14.                                         

 

SMOKE AND TRANSFER

August 9th Truck 17 responded on the 2-40box at 1523 E. Main St. in    the Wayne Heights mall for smoke in the building.  Crews found             smoke in two of the stores, and truck 17 assisted with trying to locate  the origin on the smoke.  E172 transferred to Co.2 later in the evening  while they operated a dwelling fire in Washington Cty. E172 returned  to service around 0100 hrs.                                                                                        

 

CSX RAIL YARD

August 8th As construction continues on a 46 million dollar rail yard, preemptive response measures are being developed. This yard covers  160 acres and will be loading and unloading over 240 full size trailers everyday and have storage for over 1000.  Hazardous materials will      become a major issue for the area as these trailers are carrying               everything from paper towels to radio active materials.  All trailers      being loaded on this facility will be leaving on one of the major                thoroughfares including I-81 and Rt.'s 30 and 11   A special Haz-Mat    class will be offered to local jurisdictions regarding special                       awareness involving trains.                                                                                       

 

HELPING BROTHERS IN NEED

August 7th While members were attending the monthly meeting, a        phone call was received to the station in reference to an sudden             transfer to Co.2, while they operated their yearly carnival.  This all       came about when a neighboring department of Co.2's never showed      up.  Apparently this isn't the first time this happened.  No calls were    handled during this time.  E172 will be transferring again Friday.         

STORMY NIGHT

August 3rd A micro-burst that encompassed the central and                    southern parts of the county brought numerous runs for Co. 17 and      kept other departments scrambling as well.

REFRESHER

August 2nd Once the Da' Big Stick returned from the mobile home         fire, they went directly to the evenings training site, where they were    joined with the rest of the members.  Due to the seasonably warm           temps ,members wanted to do something a little different and refresh our skills at basic water rescue and drafting operations.  With                 limited equipment to use we went over some life or death scenarios      that would require us to attempt an water rescue.  With flash flood       season in effect the chances of  water rescues are elevated.  Once            completed, current and to be operators exercised drafting                        procedures. Members wrapped up at 2200hrs.                                                 

 

W.F.D.

August 2nd Truck 17 went with 6 on the W.F.D. to  Green Ln. assisting Co.4  on a mobile home fire. Members from 17 assisted with overhaul   and mop up and was placed in service about an hour later.                       

 

BRUSH FIRE

August 1st E172, E171, SU 17 responded for a brush fire on                         Greencorner Rd.  Crews arrived to find about a half an acre on fire        that was in a semi-wooded area.  Crews used 3 lines to quickly                 contain the fire.  Water from all three units  was exhausted just as the fire was placed under control.                                                                                 

 

 

HIGH SPEED CHASE

August 1st E171 responded to fill the box on the 3-81B assignment for  an accident as a result of a high speed chase that originated in                Hagerstown.  Crews stood by with manpower, and was placed in             service shortly after.                                                                                                     

 

OUT BUILDING FIRE

July 31stBox 44-04 was sounded at 23:15 for a reported barn fire in       the 2200 BLK of LWW.  Fire turned out to be at Gishes lumber on           Frank Rd.  Crews staged in the manpower pool and were later placed   in service as there was no savable property.  Truck 42 went heavy           duty and overhaul was taken care of by a front end loader. Units            returned to service about an hour later.                                                              

 

BRUSH TASK FORCE

July 31st Special Unit 17 along with units from 8, Sta. 4 ,and 18               contained a brush fire that was spreading rapidly in multiple                  directions and was threatening a garage. Crews worked rapidly to         stop the fire and had an extensive overhaul operations.  Units                 operated for around an hour.                                                                                   

 

BUILDING FIRE

July 28th With the ladder truck  only being back in service for a few      hours,  Box 5-06 was sounded for a building fire sending Co. 17, and      surrounding departments. Crews arrived to find a large out building    involved.  Once a water supply was established Da' Big Stick II went      heavy duty on it.  Members assisted with overhaul and other small        tasks.  Check out the two short vids of the fire.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT

July 16th E171 responded along with Co. 3, on local box 3-17 for a          report of a motorcycle accident.  E171 arrived to find single                      motorcycle and 1 Pt. involved.  Crews Packaged Pt. and controlled         hazards.  Units were back in service in about a half an hour.                    

 

 

TRUCK 17 O.O.S.

July 15th Da' Big Stick II will be O.O.S. for approximately 2 weeks.         The unit will be undergoing post purchase ladder adjustments, as         well as the final mounting of some equipment, including  2 chargers     for the Holmotro SCRT and some hand lights.  While in the shop, P.M. will be preformed.                                                                                                          

 

HAZ-MAT

July 12th Co. 17 members had a busy day.  After 2 med locals an AFA    and a X-Fer, E172 rounded out the evening assisting Co.8 with a             possible Haz-Mat at the Target distribution warehouse.  E172 staged   and was  assigned as the RIT team.  The team was then split up and      did an exterior sweep of the perimeter searching for the mysterious     spill.  Co. 17 went back in service about an hour later.                                  

 

 

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN

July 11th With nice weather around its time for the annual hose             testing.  Members spent the evening testing the hose on E172 and           have plans to replace all the LDH in the coming months.  Thanks to      all who participated.                                                                                                    

 

 

 

2ND ALARM FOR MULTI-DWELLINGS

July 9th Da' Big Stick II was alerted on the second alarm for multiple  dwellings on fire shortly after midnight to 54 Homestead Dr.  Truck      17 with 6 responded and arrived only minutes after some of the first    alarm units with the assignment to set up ladder pipe operations on    side C of the main fire unit.  Command then advised to hold off and      crews from 17 split up and advanced 2 pre-connects off of  2-1 for          attack of the Bravo exposure.  DC17 was assigned accountability,           and   Da' Truck later went heavy duty on the buildings  and assisted      with overhaul.  E172 handled a X-Fer to Co.3 and no calls were                received during this time.                                                                                          

DOVE SEASON?

July 5th While responding to a recent incident a kamikaze Dove             decided to try and take out the big17.  As you can see he didn't fare       too well.  Better luck next time!!                                                                             

 

A NEW LOOK

June 23rd After the recent purchase of 2 new pieces of apparatus, it     was also time to make a change to the web.  With an ever changing        world of technology, keeping abreast of what is available, and                  knowing your available resources, is an invaluable tool that should      be channeled any way possible.  Thanks to all who keep this business   a safe and successful one for Firefighters and EMS personnel across     the board.                                                                                                                          

TRUCK 17

SHED FIRE

June 20th Co. 17 dumped the house again for an oversized storage         shed at 3572 Church Rd.   Chief 17 arrived on scene soon after                  dispatch requesting the barn assignment due to the size and load of     the shed involved.  E172 arrived and laid into the scene.  Crews from    the Engine, and Truck put a solid knock on the fire with two pre-           connects.  AFC49 was functioned water supply and other units                dropped manpower and shuttled water from the hydrant at an               Elementary school nearby.  A lengthy overhaul was needed to get the   shed on the ground to avoid a potential collapse hazard.                           

DUMPSTER, X-FER, 2MVA'S, AUTO FIRE

June 19th Members from the HOUSE OF were kept busy for a few hours Monday evening.  First E172,E171 responded for              reported dumpster next to a house on fire.  Crews from 17 staged,          and  later E172 transferred to Co.7.  While transferring an auto               accident was sounded on box 7-1 at the intersection of LWE and            Lincoln Terr. E172 first arriving advising of multiple vehicles and         multiple patients requesting a channel and 3 additional BLS units.      AC7 arrived as well as SQD 7 and E45 to assist with operations.               Shortly there after another auto accident was reported in Guilford       Township on Wayne Rd. near GHR. Chief 17 along with E171, and           SU17 responded to find 3 vehicles with one rollover  and                             confinement.  Co.17 crews popped the doors and later extricated the   Pt.  Multiple BLS and ALS units were on the scene to handle the              initial MCI.  While operating on the crash local box 3-17 was alerted    for an auto fire.  E172 first arriving and advancing a pre-connect on a  well involved auto for extinguishment.  Members got a good night          sleep before being awoken to fill the 7-81-44 assignment.  E171 staged  at the respective exit and was later placed in service.                                  

 

DUPLEX WITH EXTENSION

June 15th Members from multiple departments got an early start to     the day with a dwelling fire being sounded at 06:40hrs. Engine                171,172,TRK17, and rehab 17 responded to 875B Limestone Drive and  arrived to find a collapsed garage, a truck next to the garage and           partial extension into the house. Chief 17 arrived prior to units and     began sectoring out functions.  Crews from 17, 14, and Sta.4 made an   aggressive attack with 2 pre-connects keeping interior   extension to    a minimal.  Crews did an excellent job of laddering the building and     protecting exposures.  Unfortunately a rabbit didn't make it, however 2 cats were saved.  As other crews  arrived and fire was placed under    control extensive salvage and overhaul operations were initiated.         Crews operated until 10:30.                                                                                                                                   

 

 

 

ONE AFTER ANOTHER

June 4th At 0730 hrs local box 17-5 was alerted to respond to the area of Wayne Rd. and         Hades Church Rd, for a report of a auto accident.  Chief 17 and E171 arrived to find one auto  in the ditch with confinement.  E171 crew stabilized the vehicle and made quick work of the       door, extricating the Pt. within minutes.  As the Pt. was being taken to the Ambulance for          transport a second accident occurred when a speeding dump truck rounded the corner to find   the accident, lost control, and flipped the truck on its side.  Pt. was self extricated and               hazards   were controlled.   Units went in service about an hour later.                                          

 

WORKING FIRE DISPATCH

May 30th E172 responded to Arby's to assist on the building fire at 02:15 as a special request by command.  The crew stretch a second line and assisted with overhaul.  Shortly there after    box 7-5 was sounded for a dwelling fire sending E171 from the station and E172 from the fuel   pumps.  Crews arrived after the fire had been knocked down by a firefighter on scene with a    PW.  Units staged and went in service about 10 minutes later.                                                      

 

HIT-N-RUN

May 29th Rescue local 17-1 was alerted at 17:38 for a report of an auto accident.  While responding communications advised of a hit-n-run.  DC 47 arriving to find 2 vehicles with minor injuries. DC17 held 17 for Pt. assist and fluids.

 

ANOTHER FIRE AT THE ORCHARD

May 27th TRK 17, E171, and E172 responded for a report of a dwelling fire on Orchard road,  in the area of the Campus.  Co. 5 units arrived to find a mobile unit well off and advised of        defensive ops only.  Units from 17 arrived and staged, send manpower to the scene for              overhaul and lighting.  Crews were on the scene for about an hour before wrapping up.  This     was the same location of a fire about a year ago that burned out a small building.                      

 

 

BRUSH,2 BELLS, AND BUILDING COLLAPSE

May 25th Crews were kept busy and had 4 runs within 2 hours.  First for brush on Garber Rd. near Ingram books.  Units arrived, had a small fire and returned to service within 20 minutes.  Next were back to back alarm bells at the Animal Shelter, and an alarmed storage garage on   New Franklin Rd. Rounding out the evening was a report of a lightning strike wit partial           collapse of the building.  TRK 17 was placed in service soon after dispatch.                               

MINOR MVA

May 23rd At 08:29, rescue local 17-2A was alerted for an auto accident in the area of 2016 Wayne Rd. E171, SU17 responded, and while en-route FP17-43 advised of property damage and possible 1 class 3 Pt., therefore returning the rescue squad.  Crew contained the spills and helped with Pt. care.  Units went available 15 minutes later.   

 

 

ROOM AND CONTENTS

May 20th Box 7-5 was sounded at 15:16 hrs to 6848 Brownsville Rd., in the Green Twp.           Portable 7 (Bunky Wishard) first arrived reporting a working fire and help the family                members out of the residents.  Command 7 arrived and began functioning out units.  E171,       and 2 arrived and was assigned to help with interior, and also set ladders to begin roof opps.    Fire was quickly contained and command 7 began downgrading the assignment.  17 went back  in service about 45 minutes later.                                                                                                    

 

 

LADDER 17, PREPARE FOR TAKEOFF

 

May.20th Members spent the past three days training with Pierce representatives going          through all the new functions and abilities that the new device has to offer, as well as the          original operations of the unit. With the past behind us, the Department is back to full function of all apparatus and ready to perform at its best.  Please check back often for updates and a    new spec page for this unit.  DA' BIG STICK II IS BACK IN SERVICE!  Thanks to all who    help with the specs and behind the scenes administrative work associated in getting this new    unit on the streets.                                                                                                                            

 

APARTMENT BUILDING

May.17th E171, and 172 responded for a report of an apartment building on fire as a result of  an auto fire outside the structure at 1000 Laurich Dr.  Units arrived on the scene to find fire     showing from the auto, and building.  Crew from 17 split, and was advised to assist with the      division 1 fire group and division 1 search ops.  Engine 171, and 172 supplied 8 Engine.            

 

BACK-2-BACK

May 14th Local box 17-4 was sounded for an auto accident as a result of the construction on Wayne Rd. in the area of GHR.  Capt. 17 on the scene advising of possible Pt. refusals, however one did decide to be checked out and transported.  AFC 17 held it to EMS and SU17 only.  Shortly there after another accident related to the construction was reported at 2896 Wayne Rd.  E171 and AFC 17 arrived to find 1 auto and 1 Pt. to be transported to Chambersburg.  Hazards were controlled and 17 went back in.....

 

 

 

 

 

HIT-N-RUN

May13th Shortly after going in service from the I81 incident, crews kept busy with another accident in Antrim township, in the 9000 block of Grindstone Hill Rd.  E171 arrived to find one vehicle off the road and no one to be found around it.  Vehicle was sporting South Carolina plates???   Hazards were controlled and DC-3 placed units in service. 

 

PLASMAS ANYONE?

May13th Company 17 members were awoken at 04:20hrs for a report of a tractor trailer overturned at the NB I81 off ramp at Exit 14.  Chief 46 first arriving confirming dispatch and later reporting trailer was full of Plasma TV's and DVD players. Drivers and passengers of the tractor were self extricated and minor injuries were reported.  Crews from 8,17, and Sta.4 controlled hazards and awaited Dave's for off loading. Deputy Chief 8 later placed box in-service.

 

 

FIRST PLACE LADDER COMPANY

May 11th Da' Big Stick II attended it's first parade of the season, commemorating Memorial Day, in the Village of Scotland.  Local Fire Departments, Businesses, Schools, and the real reason for the occasion, Soldiers of past and present gathered to celebrate a day of remembrance of those who died serving the USA.  Truck 17 took first place in the truck catagory.

 

CONSTRUCTION CRASH

May 10th Engine 17-1 and SU-17 responded to a construction related chain reaction auto accident involving 4 vehicles. The accident occurred in the 2000 blk. of Wayne Rd. A total of 5 patients were transported to the hospital via 4 EMS units from 8,7, and 5.  Vehicle hazards were controlled and units went back in service.

 

        

 

Apr.30th Serious road construction has begun on Wayne Rd. between Kriner Rd. and               Burkholder Rd.  This includes new drainage systems, widening of the road, and resurfacing.     Work will continue thru June and is causing major traffic delays and congestion.  Be aware of  this if traveling the area.  Delays can also be expected on all side roads intersecting with          Wayne Rd.                                                                                                                                        

 

MINOR MVA

Apr.28th Units were alerted at 13:58hrs for a reported auto accident on Interstate 81 at the 16.5MM NB.  Captain 7 on the scene advising one vehicle in the shoulder with 2 patients.  Crew stabilized vehicle, checked for hazards and assisted with pt care.  E171 went in service at 14:20.

 

 

 

Apr.27th With Truck 17 , 1, and Squad 41 OOS, and other units already committed to a             building fire in 11's area, an unusual assignment, including Tower 2, and Tower 9 was sounded for smoke coming from a building at 1116 Wayne Rd.   After a language barrier was broken     with the nighttime cleaning service, a small fire was discovered in a grease trap of a cooking    grill.  Members quickly extinguished the flames and continued with minimal overhaul of the     grill unit.   Crews work for about an hour before clearing.                                                             

 

 

I'M HOME

Apr.24th Members were greeted with a nice surprise Monday night, as the new Ladder 17       arrived.  Now the task of preparing it to respond to the community and surrounding areas         begins.  With everyone willing and eager to get this thing on the road it should be in service in no time!!  That is, if we can get a the radios installed in a timely manner!!                                  

 

THE BLUE FLOOR

Apr.10th Members are in Appleton, WI, at the Pierce Manufacturing Plant, approving the final assembly of Da' Big Stick II. Pictured is the unit sitting on the "blue floor" where departments do the final inspection of their new apparatus. A few minor details need ironed out and Ladder 17 should be on its way home before we know it.  Check back for frequent updates.  

 

ENGINE Co. ON THE SILO

Apr.4th Box 18-4 was alerted at 01:28 for a reported Barn fire at 5245 Snider Rd, sending Eng Co. 17.  Fire Police from 18 went on the scene with a Silo on fire and extension into the barn.  Co. 17 units staged and manpower was sent to the scene to check on exposures and extension hazards.  Command 18 released part of the assignment which sent E172 to co 18 on the transfer.

MINOR CRASH ON THE  "I"

Mar.28th Local box 8-81B was sounded at 05:31 for a reported auto accident involving a tractor-trailer.  Assistant Chief 17 arrived to find one auto in the southbound and the tractor trailer in the northbound at the 13.5MM.  One minor injury, and traffic was tied up for about 10 minutes, before units were released by command 8.

DWELLING FIRE ON BURKHOLDER ROAD

Mar. 21st. At 1446 hours Box 17-5 was sounded for a reported dwelling fire at 5118 Burkholder Road in Guilford Township. Engine 171 arrived  reporting a working fire. The initial crew attempted to enter the front of the dwelling only to be driven out by intense heat and fire. As additional apparatus and firefighters arrived numerous attempts were made to attack the fire but the fire had progressed to a point that entry into the dwelling was unsafe for firefighters and command ordered all personnel to evacuate. Additional engine tankers were requested for water supply, the dwelling was back a narrow lane off Burkholder Road which hampered fire apparatus placement and also made water supply a challenge. The closest hydrant was located at the New Franklin Elementary school over two miles away. The home owner was not home at the time of the fire and the State Police Fire Marshall is investigating the incident. Crews operated until 1800 hours before clearing the scene.

 

 

 

ALMOST COMPLETE

Mar. 19th Truck 17 is very close to being complete. This photo is showing the aerial going through the ladder testing stage. Completion is scheduled for the first week of April, the final inspection is scheduled and the new Truck 17 should be in station by the end of April.

TRAINING

Mar. 15th A joint training exercise was held with local departments to better familiarize some of the target hazards buildings in the first due area.  Members from 17, 8, and 14 toured the   two Franklin Storage buildings.  First of the Kriner Rd building, and then off to the new           Guilford Springs Rd. establishment. Pre-Plans and better building knowledge will help crews   in case of an incident at the locations.  Special thanks to Dennis Perry for spending time to     take us through the buildings.  Also included are a few pics of the ladder assembly which is     now mounted.  Final approval is slated for early April.                                                                 

 

 

CHURCH RD

Mar. 7th Back to back crashes on Church Rd kept crews busy in between plowing snow.         Both crashes minor and weather related.                                                                                       

 

RIT TRAINING

Mar. 3rd 16 members tested their RIT skills Thursday night.  Multiple evolutions were           practiced.  Members reviewed the basics of Rapid Intervention Teams and equipment             carried on the apparatus, including a 24volt battery operated Holmatro rescue tool.                  Members also organized and prepared the equipment to placed on E172 which should be         here this week.                                                                                                                                 

 

ENGINE AND TRUCK LATEST

Feb. 24th Engine 172 is completed and should be heading home next week, there are some minor punch list items to complete and the unit will go to Glick Fire Equipment for service prior to making it to New Franklin. Also below are the latest picture of the ladder truck, it is moving along well and an April delivery is expected.

 

OUT BUILDING FIRE

Feb. 22nd Box 17-3 was sounded at 20:40 for a reported barn fire.  E171 arrived to find a        commercial outbuilding with smoke showing, dropping a line. After placing a pre-connect in     service, the fire was quickly knocked down.  Units were advised to stage and the box was       downgraded to 17, 8, STA. 4, and ET.1.  Truck 17 set up lighting and tarps to protect the         electrical equipment in the building.  After a moderated overhaul was completed, units went    in service.  Fire started from a salamander heater that was being utilized to dry wood in the    kiln section of the building.  Units operated for about an hour. Co. 17 was at this address for   another out building fire on December 21, 2006.                                                                           

 

 

TRUCK 17 UPDATE

Feb. 21st Well the ladder truck is well on its way.  All the major components are assembled    minus the ladder.  Paint is complete and awaiting lettering.                                                         

 

 

CHIMNEY FIRE

Feb. 17th Box 5-01 was sounded at 15:41hrs for a reported dwelling fire, sending E171 and     Truck 17.   Chief 5 went on the scene to find a fire contained to the chimney, downgrading       the assignment.  Truck 17 laddered the roof and handled protocol chimney ops.  Interior         crews found CO levels and ventilated the structure.  Crews operated for about an hour.          

 

 

 

 

SHUT IT DOWN

Feb. 15th Units were alerted for a truck leaking fuel, on the "I" at the 16NB MM.  E171        was in the area and found nothing.  E171 continued north and found the incident at the             16.5SB E171 proceeded to exit 17 for the turnaround and staged with Squad 41 shutting the    "I" down, while the fuel from a ruptured saddle tank was crossing both lanes.  Crews              contained the leak and denied entry of on coming motorists while Dave's Trucking off loaded the remaining fuel and towed the truck to their facility.   E171 had a line off for safety              purposes.                                                                                                                                          

 

 

BUILDING FIRE

Feb. 14th Hazardous weather conditions hampered response times for apparatus while            responding to a building fire that occurred in the early morning hours. E7 arrived at 2091        Edgewood Rd. to confirm a working fire.  While E171 was establishing a water supply, crews  put a quick knock on the fire.  ET-1 handled primary water supply to E7 while the supply line  to 17 was never charged.  Units operated on the scene for about an hour.  Prior to the              building fire E171 was responding to the "I" for a reported multi tractor trailer accident          which turned out to be minor.                                                                                                          

 

 

BUSY DAY

Feb. 12th Crews stayed busy with five runs for the day.  An early morning start with a run to   the "I" filling the box at 05:02, SB MM 19, E171 placed in service before arrival.  PSP           requested absorbent at an non injury auto accident in the 1800 block Wayne Rd., which sent   the Special Unit non emergency, later placed in service prior to arrival.   At 10:11 the              medical local express had a sick person at 3471 Wayne Rd.  Truck 17 headed into the boro    to cover an AFA on Grant Street while 1 was OOS, and 42 was on another run. E171, SU-17   responded to a reported brush fire at 689 Bowman Rd. Crews arrived to find an area of           rubbish and garbage involved spreading to some trees that had been cut down.  Units cleared about an hour later.                                                                                                                         

 

 

ONE EJECTED

Feb. 11th Units were alerted to the 4200 block of Wayne Rd. for an auto accident with             possible ejection.  Units arrived to confirm one in the roadway semi-conscious.  Air Medical   was sent to Chambersburg where the patient would later be flown out. Co 17. crews                 handled patient care and fluid control, while the Squads crew handled vehicle stabilization       and other hazards.  The second vehicle in the crash was hidden behind a tree row and in a       garden, missing the house by only a few feet.  Special Unit 17 responded from the scene to     an medical local on the Hades ChurchRd.

Feb. 11th Another round of progress pictures were recently sent.  The unit is partially             painted and chassis work should begin soon.  Body is done and awaiting paint.

LADDER TRUCK  IS UNDERWAY

Feb. 5th Finally, Da' Big Stick II is underway, it will soon hit the assembly line. A mid April  completion date is scheduled. Look for updates as we receive them. Some new and special upgrades have been added.

 

ICE FEST 2007

Feb. 3rd E171 headed out for a night on the town.  Members and a few ride alongs for the       weekend braved the temps and enjoyed a night out on the town to view ICE FEST 07.  While  local kids and parents were also enjoying the scenery, interested young ones got to look         around and play in the Fire Engine.

OUT BUILDING

Jan. 30th Communications sounded Box 7-4 at 23:05 for a reported barn fire, later to advise  of possible extension into the dwelling.  7 Engine arrived to confirm dispatch and Chief 7         established command.  Command advised Chief 46 to take OPS and DC 17 to take water       supply.  17 Engine arrived and completed a split lay.  Fire was quickly contained and supply   line was was never charged.  Crews checked for extension and assisted in overhaul.  The        assignment was downgraded, and units cleared at 00:28                                                              

 

 

 

GET WELL SOON

Jan. 28th The Officers and Members of the NEW FRANKLIN VOLUNTEER FIRE               DEPT.   would like to express our  sympathy, thoughts, and prayers to Jack Bowen and his    family in their time of need.  Jack has been a major help with Fire Department over the           years.   We hope for a speedy recovery and all the best.                                                             

 

ENGINE 17-2 UPDATE

Jan. 24th It's getting closer!! The body has completed sub assembly where wiring, tread         plate, and hand rails have been mounted. The cab is now on the chassis along with the pump,  and water tank is ready to be installed.  Looking Good!!                                                             

 

 

WAREHOUSE FIRE

Jan. 23rd What began as an outside investigation quickly escalated to a building fire. At         0525 Task Force 2 was alerted to 5 Mulberry St. for a building on fire. Co. 2 units arrived to  find fire through the roof of a carpet warehouse.  Command 2 quickly decided that this would  be defensive ops only.  With Tower 2 on the scene, and Truck 17 on the way, command           advised to go heavy duty with ladder pipes. W.C. TRK 27 was alerted for a third pipe to help extinguish the blaze.  Units cleared at 0953 after multiple hours of overhaul.

FRIDAY DRIVERS

Jan. 19th Rescue local 17-7 was sounded at 1420, to 1563 Falling Spring Rd.  Units arrived    to find a minor rear end collision with an elderly lady complaining of neck and back pain.         Crews check for hazards and assisted with loading of the patient. Units went in service            shortly after.                                                                                                                                    

 

 

E171 ON THE "I"

Jan. 18th Units were alerted at 23:01 for a reported auto fire at the northbound on ramp of     I-  81 at MM 14. Chief 46 first arriving advised of a fire in the engine compartment, with        E171 shortly behind. Crews placed the bumper line in service putting a quick knock on the     fire.  Chief 8 held  the assignment to E17, E45 for overhaul.  Units cleared at 23:26.                

 

 

ILLEGAL BURN

Jan. 17th  A header could be seen for miles as Co. 17 units were alerted for an outside            investigation of smoke on the Grindstone Hill Rd.   Units arrived to find a large pile of            garbage and tires on fire.  Crews went to work with a hand line and Pro-Pak to contain the      fire.  Units cleared at 1725 hrs.

TRUCK Co. ON TF-3 BOX

Jan. 15  Communications alerted box 3-04 for a building fire at 14 E. Baltimore St., sending    Truck Co. 17.  Command advised Truck 17 to take a position on side A and commence roof    operations.  Crews worked quickly to ladder and vent the building with multiple holes              including a bravo exposure vent hole with possible extension.  Crew also assisted with             lighting, fans, and overhaul of the fire building.  Units cleared at 13:28 hrs.

ENGINE 17-2 UPDATE

Jan. 14  Da' Fierce Pierce II  has finally made it onto the assembly line.  The Cab is                complete, as well as some of the body and pump housing.   Chassis assembly will begin soon   as well painting the primary components.                                                                                      

ALMOST DONE

Jan. 30th The Engine is on the final assembly line and is looking better day by day.   All the   major components are are coming together.  Final inspection is slated for Feb 23rd.
